Banff Lodge gets a facelift

Positive trends for tourism in Zimbabwe are evident, and for businesses in Bulawayo and Matopos this is good news. Bulawayo is the gateway to pristine wilderness areas like Matopos, Binga on the southern shores of Lake Kariba, Hwange National Park and Victoria Falls. It is worth planning a stop-over.

Local entrepreneur Max Rosenfels recently purchased Banff Lodge Hotel and the New Orleans Restaurant in Bulawayo and extensive renovations are taking place. Zambezi Traveller talks with Liza Rosenfels about the project and future plans:

ZT: Describe the renovation project.

LR: We are renovating the entire lodge, giving the old-world feel a modern twist with new bathrooms and finishes, but furnished with the beautiful antiques that Banff is known for.

ZT: Any other plans for recycling old stock?

LR: We have kept the furniture but have donated all the old linen, curtains etc to Sir Humphrey Gibbs Home, which is in desperate need of almost everything.

ZT: Who do you think your main market is?

LR: The businessman and tourists travelling through Bulawayo. We really value our local market as they support New Orleans and the new pool deck and bar. We will shortly be starting renovations on New Orleans which we are hoping will attract people from far and wide. Check out our Facebook page for updates.

ZT: Will you offer excursions into Matopos or further afield, like Binga and Hwange?

LR: We will definitely be offering trips to the Matopos and Binga in the near future. We are currently renovating our houseboat Mr Standish and will be offering fishing trips from Binga, which is a very beautiful part of Lake Kariba that is so accessible for South African and local travellers. We are optimistic about the future of tourism in Zimbabwe and have confidence in our investments.
