The Elephant Express, owned by Imvelo Safari Lodges and operated in a joint venture with the National Railways of Zimbabwe on the border of Hwange National Park, was designed and manufactured in Bulawayo.  Zambezi Traveller chats to Marthinus Nel, the man behind the build.

ZT: Have you ever built a railcar before?

MN: No, the Elephant Express was the first and it was very exciting to have the opportunity.

ZT: Where did the design come from?

MN: Mark Butcher, Imvelo’s managing director, told me the basic concept of what he needed and after lots of discussions and emails, my son MJ and I came up with the design.

ZT: The market for railcars can’t be big, so what else do you do?

MN: We build and supply safari vehicles. We have also manufactured underground game viewing hides from shipping containers for Imvelo Safari Lodges, as well as safari tents and other structures.

ZT: Your products service the safari industry - at the moment what is the most exciting market segment you are exploring?

MN: Our tents - we manufacture the platform for the tents out of structural steel. The tent itself is made from heavy duty ripstop canvas, with flap doors and windows, or the option of teak or aluminum sliding doors and windows.

This is a new concept where clients are able to have a completed tent with decking and furniture all in one package. We are able to provide a complete solution for safari companies, from game drive vehicles and game viewing hides to completed, furnished tented camps.
