Scientific name: Cynictis penicillata, sometimes referred to as the red meerkat

Size: body23 - 33cm, tail 18 - 25cm, weight450 - 800g

Lifespan: up to 15 years in captivity

Diet: mainly feeds upon insects including ants, termites, beetles and locusts. Their diet also consists of birds, frogs, lizards, small rodents and eggs.

Range: found throughout southern Africa with highly populated areas being Namibia, Botswana, Angola, South Africa and Zimbabwe.

Protection Status: no immediate danger of extinction
