Reed Travel Exhibitions, organisers of World Travel Market (WTM), a leading business to business travel exhibition based in London, have expanded the portfolio into the African continent with the launch of World Travel Market Africa.

This two-day event will be held at Cape Town’s International Convention Centre from 2-3 May 2014, and aims to emulate the success of sister events, WTM London, ATM (Arabian Travel Market) and WTM Latin America, to become the leading exhibition for Africa’s booming travel industry. Forming part of Africa Travel Week, WTM Africa will be one of three co-located Reed Exhibitions events during the week 28 April to 3 May 2014. Africa Travel Week will target Africa’s inbound and outbound markets under Reed’s established portfolio brands of WTM (World Travel Market), ILTM (International Luxury Travel Market) and IBTM (Incentives, Business Travel & Meetings).

Francois Neethling of the Southern Africa Tourism Services Association (SATSA) said the organisation is encouraged by this new initiative. “We are excited that a huge player like Reed is seeing enough potential in South Africa to have a presence here and to invest. This project will certainly bring fresh energy into the industry, new contacts and new options in the marketing space.”

As the finale of Africa Travel Week, WTM Africa will showcase a wide range of tourism products attracting a broad audience of local, pan-African and international visitors from all tourism sectors. A topical Africa-focused education programme, brought together by key industry figures, will run during the two days of the event, while the Hosted Buyer Programme will bring in over 300 high-profile buyers from across the globe.

Reed Exhibitions, part of the FTSE listed Reed Elsevier Group, recently announced the formation of Thebe Reed Exhibitions Pty Limited, which was established through the signing of a joint venture agreement by Reed Exhibitions and one of the largest business event companies in South Africa, the Thebe Tourism Group Pty Limited.

Reed Exhibitions acquired a majority share in Thebe Exhibitions & Projects Group, and Africa Travel Week will be the first series of events to be run by newly formed Thebe Reed Exhibitions. Managing director of TEPG, Carol Weaving, said “We are delighted with the partnership. Thebe Reed Exhibitions, through its vast experience and extensive resources, is likely to become an important player in Africa’s future economy. The inaugural Africa Travel Week in Cape Town will set the tone.”
