Scientific name: Herpestes ichneumon

Size: body 48–60cm long, and a 33–54cm tail. It weighs 1.7–4kg

Lifespan: 12 years (captive specimens have lived to be over 20 years old)

Diet: rodents, fish, birds, reptiles (snakes), amphibians and insects. Fruit and eggs are also common fare.

Range: found in Egypt, Spain, Portugal, Israel and most of sub-Saharan Africa, except for central Democratic Republic of the Congo, western South Africa and Namibia. It is never found far from water.

Protection Status: no immediate danger of extinction

Did you know? Commonly known as the Egyptian mongoose, this species has been seen to show resistance to the venom of several species of snake.
