Scientific name: Suricata suricatta

Size: 25 to 30cm from head to rump. Their tails add another 19 to 24 cm to their length. They weigh less than 1 kilogram.

Lifespan: 12 to 14 years.

Diet: Scorpions (meerkats are immune to their venom), beetles, spiders, centipedes, millipedes, worms, crickets , small mammals, small reptiles, birds, eggs, tubers and roots.

Range: Southern Africa/Kalahari Desert

Protection Status: No immediate danger of extinction

Did you know? Meerkat are sometimes called  the ‘solar panel’ of the animal world, because they use their dark-skinned, sparsely furred bellies to warm up.
